If your cat was diagnosed with a urinary crystals and the doctor instructed you to feed a special diet then you need to feed that diet and only that diet. The prescription diets are designed to dissolve and/or prevent crystals by lowering the pH of the urine. If you continue to feed the old diet your cat will continue to have urinary problems, this can be dangerous especially in male cats. If you are seeing symptoms again talk to your vet and see if they want to see your cat again.
Talk to your vet about where you can buy the food, I know it's expensive but you can save money by measuring the amount of food you feed instead of free feeding which is what most cat owners do. The average cat only needs about 1/2 cup of food per day. I feed my cats a measured 1/4 cup in the morning and 1/4 cup in the evening and that's it. This will also help keep your cat from getting overweight.
The prescription diets can usually be purchased from most vet clinics and at places like Petsmart or Petco. You may need a prescription if you buy it from somewhere other then your veterinarian.
